Brouwerij De Brabandere was founded in Bavikhove, West Flanders in 1894, when farmer Adolphe De Brabandere applied to the town council for permission to build a brewery. His son Joseph brewed the family's first beer that same year, and the brewery has remained in family hands ever since — now run by a fifth generation.
In the 1970s, De Brabandere introduced Petrus Oud Bruin, a sour ale aged for years in oak barrels, which became the brewery's flagship and best-known beer internationally. The brewery also produces the Bavik range of beers. Today it remains one of the larger independent, family-owned breweries in Belgium.
